Before Your Eyes

Filmmaker/choreographer Jo Andres (1954-2019) started Before your Eyes, Inc. for arts and education in 1988. Before Your Eyes has supported Jo’s work, as well as DANCENOISE (Lucy Sexton & Anne Iobst), John Jesurun, Rockets Redglare & Luis Fernadez de la Reguera and Obala Sarajevo, among others. Current programs include AUNTS, a roving platform for dance and performance based on the core values of inclusivity, collectivity, and resource sharing. Since 2005, AUNTS has organized over 80 events and hosted more than five hundred artists from all disciplines and at various points in their careers. The AUNTS Archive is currently working on a publication with a scheduled release in 2025 in celebration of AUNTS 20th Anniversary.

Before Your Eyes honors the legacy and film/light/dance work of founder Jo Andres through the preservation and archiving of her original body of work as both a choreographer and filmmaker, and in support of the creation of new works and platforms for other innovative artists working in dance, performance and film.

Mission

The mission of Before Your Eyes, Inc. is to foster new forms of presentation, collaboration, and pedagogy within a broad definition of dance, performance and film. We aim to empower artists to develop relevant models of performance and teaching through active practice. We promote non-hierarchical power structures, giving agency to a diverse group of artists, collectives and individuals to work within temporary communities and pop-up spaces. An all women-run organization, Before Your Eyes holds a feminist curatorial philosophy of “holding the door open,” rather than standing as a gatekeeper.
